Getting it

When does Tonotopia come out?

November 2026, on iPhone and Android at the same time. Get on the list and we'll email you the day it opens, plus the odd bit of news. Unsubscribe anytime.

What does it cost?

It's free to download. Premium adds your session card, clips up to 5 minutes with no watermark, and premium themes. Prices go up on the app page when both stores list the app.

Which phones does it run on?

iPhone and Android. The exact models and versions go up on the app page before launch.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no account and no sign-in.

Your sound

Does it record me?

It listens and draws, live. Your sound is drawn on your phone and never uploaded. Instant replay holds the last 5 seconds on your phone so one tap can play them back. A recording starts when you tap record, and a video leaves your phone only when you share it. More on your mic and your privacy.

Does this website use my microphone?

Only if you tap "Try your voice". What it hears is drawn in your browser and stays on your device. Nothing is recorded or sent.

Is it a hearing test, or a medical device?

No. Tonotopia is a way to see sound. It doesn't test, diagnose, treat or improve hearing or speech.

Using it

What am I looking at?

A spiral of notes. Low notes sit near the middle and high notes toward the rim. One lap is one octave, and every note with the same name lands on the same spoke, so a chord makes the same shape in any octave. The bright dot is the note you hear, and the fainter dots above it are its harmonics. How it works has the drawing.

What can it hear?

Anything with a pitch, up to A7 at about 3,500 Hz: voices, instruments, records, speakers, a whistle. Many birds sing higher than that and only partly show. Noisy sounds show up too, as scattered dots.

Can I put it on a TV or a projector?

Yes. Mirror your phone to the screen and the spiral goes full size, for a listening room, a classroom or a choir rehearsal.

Do I need a microphone?

No. The phone's built-in mic is plenty.

Can I use it with a choir or a class?

Yes. Set the reference pitch to 440, 442 or 432 to match your piano, run a drone, and mirror the spiral to the screen. Here's how choir directors and voice teachers use it.

Merch and the list

When can I buy the merch?

The shirts on the merch table are on sale now. Printful prints each one to order and ships it in the US. The caps, totes, mug, bottle and stickers follow soon.
