Accessibility

Tonotopia turns sound into something you can see, so it should work for as many people as we can reach. Here's where this website stands.

What's built in

We're building this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

  • Sound waits for youNothing on this website plays a sound until you tap for it, and you can turn it off again with the same tap.
  • The mic waits for you tooThe microphone starts when you tap "Try your voice" and stops when you tap again or leave the page. What it hears stays on your device.
  • Every spiral is describedEach spiral carries a written description for screen readers, and a label naming the tune, where it comes from and how its sound was made.
  • Less motion when you ask for itIf your device is set to reduce motion, the spirals start still and show the whole tune at once. Press play when you want them to move.
  • A keyboard is enoughEvery link, button and control can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a clear ring showing where you are. A skip link at the top jumps past the masthead.
  • Room for a thumbButtons and controls are sized for a finger, not a mouse pointer, and the links in menus and lists each get a full row to tap.
  • Light and darkThe site follows your device's light or dark setting, and the colors are chosen to stay readable in both.
  • Text that growsText sizes follow your browser's settings, and the pages reflow at any width down to a small phone.

What still falls short

The game at Guess the tune is being brought in line with the rest of the site. Its buttons work with a keyboard, but it leans on listening, and we're adding a way to play it by sight alone.

If something here gets in your way, it's a bug. Please tell us.

In the app

The app's accessibility notes go up here when it opens in November. Until then, ask us about anything you need it to do.

Tell us

Write to us with the page, what you were trying to do and what got in the way. A person reads every message.
